Penny Ashford finds inspiration in nature and travel. Water is a favorite subject, particularly the movement, light and color of the sea. Literally, immersed in her subject, Ashford's specialized underwater camera transforms the traditional horizontal horizon line into a fluid moving plane that upends expectations. Extreme close-ups of bubbles and swirling currents become abstract form with biomorphic structure and composition. Ashford's abiding interest in classic photojournalism leads the composition of her travel photos to move beyond the purely visual and into the realm of storytelling.
Ashford graduated from Mount Holyoke College and studied at the International Center for Photography in New York. She has been exhibited at the Newport Art Museum, Coleman Center of Education in Newport, RI, Cade Tompkins Gallery, Providence, RI, The Antique and Artisan Gallery, Stamford, CT, as well as galleries throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic.
Her work can be seen on Tory Burch's Daily Blog, Tory Daily and The Stylistic blog.
